Dartmouth College to pilot HiSoftware’s
AccMonitor To Monitor Accessibility of
College Web Site
HiSoftware’s AccMonitor Helps Dartmouth
Develop Accessible Web Site
CONCORD, NH –
September 20, 2002 -- HiSoftware, Inc.,
a leading provider of Web Site
Accessibility solutions, today announced
that Dartmouth College would be piloting
its AccMonitor™ software. The software
will be used to test and monitor the
College web site in an effort to make
the site accessible to all users.
Installation of the
software is planned to coincide with the
campus-wide distribution of an
informational booklet entitled “Working
Toward an Accessible Dartmouth Web.” The
booklet is designed to help web authors
at the College understand the issues
surrounding web access and what they can
do to make their sites accessible. The
booklet is the work of the Web Access
Group (WAG), an ad hoc committee formed
in 2002 to help make Dartmouth’s Web
site accessible and navigable to all
users.
Dartmouth College
joins a growing list of schools and
universities that use HiSoftware
Company’s accessibility solutions,
including but not limited to University
of Maine, University of Wisconsin,
Kansas State University, University of
Massachusetts, UCLA, and many others.
HiSoftware Company also has enterprise
software license agreements with both
federal and state government agencies
and works with several Fortune 1000
corporations including Microsoft
Corporation, Mercury Interactive, and
Fidelity Investments:

Under the terms of the pilot license
agreement, HiSoftware Company will
provide its AccMonitor Server enterprise
software to Dartmouth College for use by
its staff, faculty and students for one
year. HiSoftware will also work with the
Dartmouth College Web Access Group to
create a campus-wide training program
for users of the software.
“We will use
AccMonitor to educate people about the
accessibility of the sites they create
and manage, and to help them make sure
that their sites can be used by people
who use tools like screen readers or
text-only browsers to access the Web,”
said Sarah Horton, web developer for
Academic Computing and Web Access Group
Chair.
About AccMonitor
AccMonitor is an automated server
solution that examines entire Web Sites,
and reports their accessibility status
under Section 508 of the Federal
Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998
and W3C® WCAG 1.0 Guidelines. AccMonitor
verification technology and dynamic
reporting includes executive-level
graphical reporting, automated email
alerts, and detailed reports for all Web
files or only files that fail
programmatic checkpoints. Running as a
Windows® service, AccMonitor is an
automated accessibility testing solution
for Web sites or for use in conjunction
with intranet servers or file servers.
Using a crawler, AccMonitor tests sites
for compliance with Section 508 and W3C
accessibility standards. AccMonitor
spiders, or crawls over, entire Web
sites and reports on their accessibility
status. AccMonitor particularly benefits
organizations that need to monitor
multiple servers that host information
via the World Wide Web. AccMonitor is a
server solution that is designed to run
with no user interaction once
configured. AccMonitor can be scheduled
to crawl Web sites daily, weekly, or
monthly. It also allows users to log-on
for “on demand” reports on the
accessibility status of their Web pages.
